Celtic Turned Baby Rattles

$55.00

This baby rattle is an adaptation of a Celtic ringed woodturning from the 4th Century B.C. The original turning, a druid chalice with 3 rings turned on the narrow neck of the base, is the oldest surviving wooden artifact from Europe and was preserved in the oxygen-free environment of a peat bog in Belgium.

It shows that for thousands of years, wood turners have often added “rings on a spindle” to give a decorative touch to their work.  Phil turns these rattles from one piece of maple or walnut. The finish is mineral oil, which is safe for babies, and can be renewed with 220 grit sandpaper and a fresh coat of mineral or vegetable oil.

Rattles are available in the following types of wood:

  • Sugar Maple

  • Sugar Maple, birdpeck

  • Black Cherry

  • Walnut
